The last Grand Slam of the year has just ended, and it was a spectacular event. Not only because of champion's comeback ala Kim Clijsters but also because of some young tennis guns that showed the world that they not only look good but also play good, of course these two young tennis hotties are Caroline Wozniacki and Yanine Wickmayer. I already wrote how I believe that Caroline Wozniacki has the potential to become world No.1, and U.S. Open 2009 showed that I was spot on. Yanine Wickmayer was another huge surprise, and she connected couple of good matches in a row showing signs of big improvement in her game. The only question that still remains is whether she will maintain this momentum in the upcoming matches.
This definitely wasn't tournament for Russian tennis beauties. Both Dementieva and Sharapova couldn't cope with American teen sensation Melanie Oudin, and they got kicked out in early stage of the tournament. Hot Serbian tennis girls Ana Ivanovic and Jelena Jankovic were even worse showing big lack of form this year. Ana Ivanovic has been struggling the whole year, and as she said she even considers quitting tennis for some time because she needs rest from the game so her loss wasn't so big surprise to me but Jelena Jankovic should have done better, especially after winning Cincinnati.
This tournament will also be remembered by couple of ugly words from 2008 champion Serena Williams. I can understand her fighting spirit, and importance of the point but defending champion and girl with so much experience should have know better than to resort to bad words.
In any case it was yet another thrilling tournament, and I'm kind a sad that this was the last Grand Slam of this year. Hopefully we'll see lot more good matches before this tennis year ends.
